HP ProLiant DL320s Storage Server
Overview
The HP ProLiant DL320s Storage Server is a high-density
Network Attached Storage (NAS) solution that enables
customers with small and medium office environments
to consolidate multiple direct-attached storage (DAS)
installations and management interfaces to a single
centralized Windows-based file and print solution.
While DAS can be fractured and difficult to track and
maintain, NAS lowers your total cost of storage ownership
since management and protection are performed from
one interface in one location. It supports multiple
file sharing protocols and Windows storage-specific
tools that make file share maintenance both easy and
powerful. And with optional Microsoft® iSCSI Software
Target, you can upgrade to host block-based storage
for Exchange, SQL or other applications.
Our NAS solution not only aids in consolidation and
cost reduction, but also helps you spend less time
and effort deploying and managing file and print services.
It comes with Microsoft® Windows Storage Server 2003
Release 2 (WSS2003 R2) Operating System pre-installed,
and user storage is pre-configured. It’s quick to install
and it's Windows through-and-through--if you know how
to use an MMC-based user interface, you already know
how to manage a ProLiant Storage Server. And the unique
Rapid Start-up Wizard streamlines installation even
more. Finally, remote management capability at both
the system level and at the hardware component level
(Integrated Lights-out 2) means you can manage and
troubleshoot from anywhere.
The DL320s Storage Server leverages industry-standard
components to protect and optimize your hardware investment:
it packs storage (up to 9TB raw), memory, and I/O you
need into only 2U of rack space; it supports SAS or
SATA drives so you can choose your desired level of
performance, reliability, and affordability; and it
integrates seamlessly into any HP ProLiant or StorageWorks
environment.
Features & Benefits
- A single centralized file/print
appliance platform to manage and protect: Simplify tasks and lower your
total cost of storage ownership by consolidating islands
of direct-attached storage to one easy-to-use Windows
platform
- Multi-protocol
file serving: Support for SMB/CIFS,
NFS, HTTP, FTP, WebDAV AppleTalk, and NetWare file
protocols means you can deploy in wide range of heterogeneous
file serving environments.
- Storage-specific Windows
management tools: Tools
like Directory Quotas, Storage Reporting, Single-instance
Storage (SIS), and Distributed File System (DFS)
Replication for remote offices make Windows file
share management both easy and powerful.
- Microsoft® iSCSI software
target support: You can
upgrade your Storage Server to host block-based application
storage to further consolidate and lower hardware
and administrative costs.
- Microsoft®
Windows Storage Server 2003 Release 2 (WSS2003
R2) Operating System pre-installed: It’s
Windows! It fully integrates with Microsoft Active
Directory and Distributed File System (DFS) environments
and you probably already know the MMC-based management
interface.
- Pre-configured
user storage and Rapid Start-up Wizard: Go from out-of-the-box to setting up file sharing
rights and file serving in minutes.
- Remote
manageability: You can manage and troubleshoot
from anywhere at both the system level (with Remote
Desktop or HTTPS) and at the hardware component level
(using Integrated Lights-out 2).
High-density storage on a highly integrated platform:
Packs all the storage (up to 9TB raw), memory, and
I/O you need into only 2U of rack space.
- HP
ProLiant industry-standard hardware: Relax—your
investment is protected because you’re not locked
into a proprietary platform. And you can seamlessly
integrate into any HP ProLiant or StorageWorks management
environment.
- Print
server support: Don’t forget that DL320s Storage
Server is a Windows print server too, offering consolidation
benefits to your Windows print environment.

Questions & Anwsers
1. What is the difference
between Windows Storage Server 2003 Release 2 (R2)
installed on the DL320s Storage Server and the
older Windows Storage Server Service Pack 1 (SP1)
operating system?
The Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 (WSS2003 R2)
operating system installed on the DL320s Storage
Server is the latest release in this operating
system series and provides improved productivity,
more robust storage management and simpler branch
office integration. Windows Storage Server 2003
R2 provides more optimization for the storage
server role including: Performance Optimization;
Single Instance Storage (SIS); Search Enhancements.
Additionally, a significant amount of new storage
management functionality has been added, including:
File Server Management Console (HP enhanced);
File Server Resource Manager; Print Manager Console
and New Distributed File System (DFS) capabilities
focused on the branch office including: New DFS
User Interface; New DFS Replication that uses
the Remote Differential Compression (RDC) algorithm;
New DFS Cross File RDC capability when the WSS2003
R2 operating system, Enterprise Edition, is at
one end of the hub/branch link. Updated DFS namespace
failover, failback and prioritization controls.
2. What is the advantage
of the HP ProLiant DL320s Storage Server over
a general-purpose server?
The key advantages are the DL320s Storage Server
is an easy to manage, ready to deploy storage
solution that fits readily into an existing Ethernet
network. The DL320s Storage Server has been specifically
designed as a dedicated file and print server
for heterogeneous clients. Based on the Microsoft®
Windows Storage Server 2003 Release 2 operating
system, it includes integrated software designed
to support multi-protocol environments, “point-in-time
snapshots”, directory quotas, file screening
and storage reporting capability. The DL320s
Storage Server is based on a bundle of hardware
and software and cannot be built from individual
components. Windows Storage Server 2003 Release
2 is pre-installed and HP-specific management
tools are included. The DL320s Storage Server
hardware and user storage is also pre-configured
and optimized for performance and reliability.
3. What is the advantage
of the HP ProLiant DL320s Storage Server over building
my own NAS device?
The HP
ProLiant DL320s Storage Server ships from the factory
with all the software and hardware you need to
easily integrate it into your storage or network
environment. All software and hardware needed to
begin consolidating or sharing files is pre-installed
and pre-configured.
4. What is the advantage
of the HP ProLiant DL320s Storage Server over the
competition?
The DL320s Storage
Server features a built-in DVD-ROM for quick system
restore, remote management for both the system
and hardware component level, and a best-in-class
storage density (up to 9TB in a 2U form factor).
5. Why do I need the
Installation Service?
To leverage HP’s
experience to reduce set up and configuration time
for your DL320s Storage Server. HP sets up a file-share
and configures a host to access that file-share
to demonstrate operability. The DL320s Storage
Server product orientation also provides a good
overview of how to set these features for your
entire environment and how to use the management
features.
6. What other applicable
services does HP offer?
The HP SAN/NAS
Design & Architecture Service provides an extensive
and comprehensive review and recommendation of
how your networked storage environment can be designed
and implemented to meet your business storage needs.
7. What about ongoing
maintenance or assistance?
HP has a very
broad selection of these types of services that
we call HP Care Packs. Included are various response
times (4 hour same day, next day, etc.) as well
as coverage periods (Monday – Friday, 24x7, 1 year,
3 year, etc.). These services are available for
both hardware and software to meet all your support
needs.
8. What do the print
services included with this product allow?
The print services
feature in Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 Standard
Edition allows users unlimited network attached
printers.
